Information/Highlights from the Education Open Source Conference Continued
Building Workforce Education Community Partnerships by Debra Mills of CORD A survey of over 400 U.S. employers revealed that the most important skill sets new entrants (recent high school, community college and university graduates) need to succeed in the workplace are professionalism/work ethic, oral and written communications, teamwork/collaboration, critical thinking/problem solving. These skills should be infused throughout the curriculum. Secondary and postsecondary advisory committees in each pathway could possibly merge to one committee to better integrate with business and industry. Creating a partnership takes time, effort and lasting commitment. Understand the national and local trends affecting local workforce employment conditions, know the details of company culture and training, be a solution for employer needs, and stay engaged with the business community and look for ways to expand services for learner and employers.
Dr. Raymund Paredes, Commissioner of Higher Education, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board The Closing the Gaps campaign to increase participation in postsecondary education continues. The national average for high school students going to college within 15 months of graduation is 65%. The average rate for a high school student in Texas going to college within 15 months is less than 50%. This rate must be improved, or the Texas economy will be negatively impacted. College readiness standards were strongly emphasized. Retention and success, however, will be more important than enrollment.
Connecting Education & the Economy for Educators Richard Froeschle, LMCI, TWC To improve the connection between education and the economy, one must recognize what demographic phenomena are driving the labor force pool, what phenomena do employers react/respond to that shape the demand for worker skills and educational preparation, and what drives education and training program offerings, costs and priorities. Student career interests and majors in college often do not align with actual careers needed in the labor market. In Texas there are more openings than graduates for registered nurses, elementary teachers, computer systems analysts, software engineers and clergy, but are more graduates than openings for historians, accountants, graphic designers, clinical psychologists, journalists, art directors, advertising executives, and film/video editors.
A number of presentations from the conference have been posted online at www.ctat.org/events/08present.html. Others will be added as they are received.
