Achieve Texas – Implementation of the Statewide Career Clusters Initiative
“Achieve Texas: Lifelong Success for All Students” is the new theme of the statewide career clusters initiative. Kathy Gentry, CTE Team Leader for Region 12 Education Service Center, presented a workshop last Tuesday for Consortium partners on the new initiative. Those attending the P-16 conference last month also had an opportunity to hear about the program during interest sessions.
The concept for the 16 career clusters is national in origin and was developed from the vision of state CTE (Career Technology Education) directors. CTE serves about 11 million people in the US by providing an integrated technical and academic foundation from 9th grade through postsecondary. CTE and Tech Prep are natural partners and have many shared goals. Both Career Clusters and Tech Prep promote transitions to further education through CTE models.
Benefits of using a career clusters framework include: more career exposure and integrated curriculum opportunities, lower drop-out rate, less remediation at the postsecondary level and a larger pool of qualified workers.
CTE teachers will receive more detailed information at Summer Conferences. A website for Achieve Texas is under development at www.achievetexas.org.
