Program description: Baby Boomers, who were mentored and trained by Veterans, are now managed by Generation X’ers and are co-workers of Generation Y’s connected kids. As the youngest members of the workforce, many Generation Y kids are unfamiliar with workplace expectations and decorum. This workshop will demonstrate simple ways to teach workplace skills in any discipline. Participants will practice a contextual teaching model that targets Gen Y’s learning preferences and receive ready-to –use activities and handouts that can be used to teach students basic etiquette, good work ethics, conflict-resolution strategies, and technical writing/documenting skills. Tied Up in Knots Over Technical Writing is an interactive presentation that is both entertaining and instructional as participants learn the basics of good technical writing by tying nautical knots. Participants will learn creative ways to infuse technical writing assignments into any discipline.
Learner objectives: 1. understand the characteristics of the four generations in the workforce today. 2. understand what employers value and question about Generation Y workers. 3. learn the ethics, etiquette, and writing/documenting skills that Generation Y workers need to be successful in the workplace. 4. learn strategies to prevent conflicts in the workplace. 5. practice a contextual teaching model. 6. participate in classroom lessons/activities. 7. identify the types of writing the workplace demands. 8. learn the basics of writing good instructions. 9. learn creative ideas to infuse technical writing activities/assignments into any discipline.

Changes in the ATC (Advanced Technical Credit) Program for 2006-2007
The Agricultural Science and Family and Consumer Sciences content areas of the ATC Crosswalk have been revised, and there will be changes to the ATC courses being offered in these areas. These changes will take effect beginning with the 2006-2007 school year. To see a list of these course changes, please go to the following website: http://www.atctexas.org/06-07changes.asp
There will also be changes to computer courses on the 2006-2007 crosswalk. These changes will be posted on the website as soon as they are finalized.
New courses are scheduled to be added to the ATC list and a few of the current ones will be eliminated from the ATC list. Students who have taken these ATC courses (those scheduled to be eliminated) through this school year (05-06) will still be eligible to receive college credit for them through the ATC Program. Teachers will not be able to teach these courses for credit through the ATC Program after the current school year because the courses have been removed from TEA's PEIMS code tables. The schools are only able to offer those courses that are in the PEIMS code table, and since the ATC courses are not in the 2006-2007 table the schools will not be able to offer them. Note that the non-ATC versions of these courses will still be in the PEIMS code table. The removal of a course from the ATC crosswalk should not affect a local articulation. An ATC course that has been removed from the crosswalk will still show up on the teacher's approval certificate, but since it has been removed from the PEIMS table the teacher will no longer be able to offer it. Here is the link to the PEIMS data standards for 06-07: http://www.tea.state.tx.us/peims/standards/0607/index.html. The code tables are near the bottom of the page.
Also, the new crosswalk for the 2006-2007 school year is now available on the ATC website at www.atctexas.org.
Teachers who plan to attend staff development for the ATC program at any of the upcoming conferences should double check the new list for their courses prior to attending the training!
