(posted January 2008)
The Central Texas Tech Prep Consortium organized a Local Articulation Workshop that was held November 8, 2007, at Central Texas College in Killeen. Approximately 60 secondary teachers from 12 school districts attended. Districts represented included Bartlett, Belton, Copperas Cove, Gatesville, Granger, Hamilton, Jonesboro, Killeen, Lampasas, Temple, Thorndale, and Troy. Articulation agreements were initiated and/or updated for both Central Texas College and Temple College.
Faculty representatives from Central Texas College included: Jack Van Dorn, Business Management; Herb Maglietta, Computer-Aided Design; Dennis Ford, Computer Science; Jon Cella, Criminal Justice; Gordon Bacon, Early Childhood Professions; Rick Hindman, Hospitality/Culinary; Billy Hazzard, Industrial Technology; and Jerrie Cleaver, Office Technology.
Faculty representatives from Temple College included: Hal Ward, Business Management; Gail Cox, Child Development; Talma Botts, Computer Information Systems; and Steve Taylor, Computer-Aided Design.
Several administrators, counselors and advisors attended as well. In all, over 80 people participated. Central Texas College provided refreshments for attendees.
There were approximately 65 articulation agreements that were initiated or updated at the workshop. The consortium will send many of the articulation agreements established, along with a six year plan for each area, to the state this spring for approval in order to add or create Tech Prep programs for many districts. The addition of Tech Prep programs will allow more opportunities for awarding articulated credit at the college level and will allow these districts the opportunity to code more students as a “3” in PEIMS.

Four by Four Curriculum Information
Rules clarifying the revised graduation requirements approved last year were adopted by the State Board of Education at the November 2007 meeting. These changes reflect the addition of a fourth credit of math and a fourth credit of science and affect the Recommended High School Program and the Distinguished Achievement Program as mandated by House Bill 1, 79th Texas Legislature.
Implementation of the new graduation requirements is required beginning in school year 2007-2008, and is applicable to students entering ninth grade this year. The amendments change the number of credits required for graduation under these programs from 24 to 26.
To learn more about the graduation requirements please visit the links at the following website: www.tea.state.tx.us/curriculum/fourbyfour.html.
Happy Holidays from the Tech Prep Staff!

AchieveTexas – Counselors are the Key
AchieveTexas is a college and career initiative designed to enable students to achieve success by preparing them for secondary and postsecondary opportunities and meaningful employment. Although initially presented to high school career and technology educators, the program vision includes all grades as well as postsecondary education. In elementary school, the focus will be on career awareness. Middle school students will have opportunities for career exploration, while high school students will select an initial career cluster and program of study. With postsecondary education or training, students will continue career preparation. Continuing education and career advancement are also parts of the initiative.
With AchieveTexas, resources are organized by cluster and will be integrated throughout the curriculum. Counselors will be the key to the success of the program. Counselor resource kits for the AchieveTexas program have been mailed to the Education Service Centers for distribution to counselors. Kits include a resource guide, CD, poster and one of each of the 16 career cluster college and career planning guides. The counselor resource guides give an overall look at AchieveTexas, offer steps for creating a Texas Achievement Plan, or TAP, list the 16 career clusters and the programs of study as well as offer other implementation resources for the program.
