(posted April 2004)
A planning committee for Tech Prep/Transition and Transfer (TnT) met Wednesday, April 14, at Temple College's Health Sciences Center to discuss the development of a series of 8-year model plans that will facilitate students through seamless pathways beginning in high school and continuing through community college and on to a baccalaureate with a university with exit points along the way. Representatives from Belton, Killeen and Temple school districts, Central Texas College, Temple College, University of Texas at Arlington, and the Central Texas Tech Prep Consortium attended the meeting.

The group selected three writing teams representing the program areas of Business, CIS, and Health Sciences. Each writing team will consist of a CATE Director, counselor, content specialists, college faculty, and business advisor. Each team will meet and create 8-year plans bringing the suggested models back to the group for discussion/possible adoption. The focus group will reconvene on June 29 for discussion and adoption of the deliverables.

"Successful Transitions" Theme for Area Counselors' Network Workshop
(posted April 2004)
"Successful Transitions" for students pursuing higher education was the central theme of a Counselor's Network workshop and luncheon April 23, 2004, at Central Texas College.

Sponsored by the Central Texas Tech Prep Consortium and the Central Texas Counselors' Network, the workshop provided valuable information about transitioning to college. Twenty-one college technical program faculty members from Central Texas College and Temple College provided the audience with pertinent information and requirements for their respective programs. About forty area counselors, advisors, teachers and students attended the workshop.

Welcoming the group to the campus was Mr. Ben Wickersham, Deputy Chancellor for Educational Program and Support Services at Central Texas College.

Retired Gen. Robert Shoemaker from Partners in Education spoke on the Central Texas Two-Step program. This program helps provide a seamless pathway for students from area high schools to community colleges to universities.

Dr. Andrew Wolf, Division Director of TRIO at Temple College, spoke on the importance of programs like TRIO to the success of students in college, particularly those whose parents did not attend college or who have other disadvantages. The TRIO program at Temple College has a high success rate but is limited in the number of students who can be served.

Keynote speaker was Dr. Karen Clos-Bleeker, Vice President of Educational Services at Temple College. In a light-hearted presentation, Dr. Bleeker's lessons in life inspired attendees to "learn from other's mistakes and to be true to themselves". She gave examples in her own life where she was able to succeed through perseverance and through others having faith in her.
