Perkins IV Plan for the State of Texas
A draft of the State Plan for Career and Technical Education (CTE) 2008-2013 is now available at the following website: www.tea.state.tx.us/cte/Accountability/draftplan.html
A series of public hearings on the state plan will take place around the state in October. The first hearing will be October 15, 2007, at 5:00 PM at Region XIII Education Service Center in Austin. The final plan is scheduled to be submitted in April 2008.
In the plan, the Texas Education Agency envisions a comprehensive plan of action for CTE that acknowledges the fact that the state is facing a time of great demographic and economic change. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) sees the next step as being premised on a clear vision for the future, that is, Closing the Gaps by 2015. Higher education will address the global economic demands by increasing student participation and success through rigorous postsecondary education programs.
Please see the entire plan for the shared vision of both agencies and a link to the other public hearings at the website listed in the first paragraph of this newsletter.

CATEMA (Career and Technology Education Management Application)
The CATEMA system is now ready for school districts to begin entering classes and students for the 2007 2008 school year. School districts that have not participated in CATEMA in the past but have a local articulation agreement with Central Texas College or Temple College, or have a teacher that is eligible to teach Advanced Technical Credit (ATC) courses, and would like to participate in CATEMA, can contact Misty Harrell at 254.298.8483 or mharrell@templejc.edu.
CATEMA is important because it helps identify students with articulated credit once they register for classes in college. Because the credit may be in escrow requiring the student to complete coursework with the college before the credit is articulated, many students often forget they have the credit and may end up repeating the course(s) they will get articulated. CATEMA helps to identify these students to college Advisors who will make sure they are advised appropriately. School districts can also use the reports generated by CATEMA to help them when coding PEIMS data.
Teacher training on CATEMA is available for school districts. Contact Misty Harrell to discuss options for training.
CATEMA is a web-based application designed to identify Career & Technology students who may have Tech Prep articulated credit in escrow.
Tech Prep Ambassador Program

Tech Prep Ambassador Program
The Tech Prep Ambassador program is a "Best Practice" program aimed at encouraging career and technology students to become advocates for career and technology and Tech Prep on their respective high school campuses. The goal is to promote CTE programs and Tech Prep with Central Texas students using Central Texas students.
Students from area high schools are selected as Tech Prep Ambassadors at the beginning of the school year. Students attend a workshop that offers training in leadership skills and prepares them to give presentations to community organizations, as well as their peers, on the benefits of career and technology education.
Information about the program has been sent to the Tech Prep contact at each school district. Applications for the program are due October 5. For more information on the Tech Prep Ambassador Program, contact Misty Harrell at 254.298.8483 or mharrell@templejc.edu.
